Twelve High Chicks thanks regular guest contributor Tracy Curley for this timely, firsthand account. We hope she, and all of our friends in Toronto, remain safe while continuing to fight for patients’ rights and access.

Toronto is still in turmoil after the Project Claudia raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. Stakeholders met this past Tuesday, June 7th, to prepare for the raids that are rumoured still to come. Meanwhile Canada waits for legalization of recreational pot to be introduced in the spring of 2017.

Trouble in Toronto

Many were shocked when on Thursday, May 26th, Toronto Police Service (TPS) raided more than 40 marijuana dispensaries, using battering rams and entering with guns drawn. 90 people were arrested when Project Claudia happened; police filed 186 trafficking charges (possession for the purpose of) and 71 charges for proceeds of crime (cash seized on premises).

Patients Persecuted — In the Medical Marijuana Grey Area

Nothing is more infuriating to me right now than waiting for the new government to decide what will be allowed and what will be in the medical marijuana grey area since the Allard win. What will be considered okay after Health Canada incorporates personal growing into the Licensed Producer system designed into the MMPR?

The Candy

I recently fell victim to this unjust law again when one of my friends/patients left my house after spending the afternoon. We exchanged methods on how to make the tincture that was then incorporated into hard candy. He had brought all his own product with him and when he left my house he also took what we had made together.  A few hours later he came flying back into my house, stating he had been pulled over by the RCMP and had been held for several hours. He told me they had ripped his vehicle apart and all they wanted to know about was where, how, and who had made that candy. Was I was under investigation … for candy?!

In life, one may face a moment of defiance, suffer a loss or experience grief, and perhaps be forced to circumvent changes to regain what one feels to have lost in the first place. Sometimes when suffering, one seeks something of a spiritual pillow to soften the blows of reality. And, most often, one seeks inner peace to stitch back the hope lost.

It was the early 70s. Two friends and I were sitting in a city park in Toronto a pound of Mexican brick weed in a brown paper grocery bag — grocery bags were still paper back then. We were waiting for a classmate’s older brother who was coming to buy the elbow from us.

Pulled Out of the Cannabis Closet

I am a face in the crowd, a marijuana consumer that for many years hid in the closet, hid from my family, and hid from society.

When I was young, I enjoyed smoking pot now and then mostly to unwind with my friends. My ex even sold a bit and in 1989 he ended up doing a bit of time for trafficking. The ‘80s and early ‘90s  were long before anyone was talking about marijuana being medicine, and before I was paying attention to anything having to do with my health; they were my crazier years.

In 1992 I became a mom.  Life changed and years passed but I was still consuming pot, not for health reasons, just ‘cause I liked it.

Barefoot, no longer Pregnant, and Imprisoned

Ten weeks to the day that I met with a qualified doctor I had my pink papers in my hand and I thought I was invincible. But the law had other ideas.

Sending off packages of my home grown cannabis to friends and patients on a regular basis—I had my garden growing long before my papers were in my hand—I treated it like the plant it is. Until weeks later when I went to my local post office to pick up a package on April 15th, 2011 and was arrested for trafficking…of four grams of cannabis. Yes, four grams. Thankfully although many other packages went out that day only one was caught in the mail.

A Candid Interview With Brian O’Dea

I first was introduced to Brian O’Dea, a polite and distinguished gentleman, when I travelled to Ottawa in December 2014 to meet other cannabis freedom activists and to screen Adam Scorgie’s The Culture High. With a polished demeanour and extensive vocabulary, Brian wouldn’t strike you as the type of person who would ‘move’ copious amounts of cannabis around the world. He is educated, experienced, and skilled in his endeavours. He’s known to be one of smartest criminals the DEA has ever managed to catch; it was only after he’d retired as drug lord that the DEA finally managed to gather enough evidence to convict him.
