Twelve High Chicks thanks regular guest contributor Tracy Curley for this timely, firsthand account. We hope she, and all of our friends in Toronto, remain safe while continuing to fight for patients’ rights and access.

Toronto is still in turmoil after the Project Claudia raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. Stakeholders met this past Tuesday, June 7th, to prepare for the raids that are rumoured still to come. Meanwhile Canada waits for legalization of recreational pot to be introduced in the spring of 2017.

Trouble in Toronto

Many were shocked when on Thursday, May 26th, Toronto Police Service (TPS) raided more than 40 marijuana dispensaries, using battering rams and entering with guns drawn. 90 people were arrested when Project Claudia happened; police filed 186 trafficking charges (possession for the purpose of) and 71 charges for proceeds of crime (cash seized on premises).

Walking the Talk: Jennifer Collett Walks for Dignified Access

Twelve High Chicks thanks regular guest contributor Tracy Curley for this article.

She’s been described by many in the medical cannabis community as an angel, but Jennifer Collett will usually just shrug off such compliments and start telling you about her patients and their need for dignified access. Jennifer is focused, her goal to convince provincial politicians that it is in their purview to provide access to clean, affordable medical cannabis for all patients across Canada.

Twelve High Chicks thanks regular guest contributor Tracy Curley for this article.

When Lisa Campbell, Chair of the newly formed Toronto chapter of Women Grow, approached me about being on the steering committee for their Signature Launch event I was more than a little hesitant. After being a founding member of the dysfunctional and now barely visible NORML Women’s Alliance of Canada, I had no interest in women’s groups or gender politics of any kind. But I like and respect the women involved and I wanted to support them.

So what is Women Grow?

Close Encounters of the Police Kind

It was the early 70s. Two friends and I were sitting in a city park in Toronto a pound of Mexican brick weed in a brown paper grocery bag — grocery bags were still paper back then. We were waiting for a classmate’s older brother who was coming to buy the elbow from us.

This summer, because of my convictions about access for everyone, I was honoured to accept when I was voted in as President of the Canadian Medical Cannabis Partners (CMCP) a non-profit society that is the voice for over 3500 patients and caregivers. I have always fought for the rights of patients, being one myself, as well as the rights of everyone out there and this group’s mandate is something I can really run with. I want to thank the board of directors for the opportunity!

A Woman of Weed Becomes Weed Woman

Twelve High Chicks would like to thank our first guest contributor, Tracy Curley.

In my regular day I am just like you. I binge-watch Netflix. There is always something that needs to be cleaned, paid or taken care of in some way. I struggle with my self-image. I worry about the state of the world. I love my friends and family, and my little Chihuahua, Sadie. I’m also a medical marijuana patient: diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 6, I have been using cannabis medicinally for over a decade. With the use of cannabis I’ve been fortunate to be healthy enough to advocate for medical marijuana and legalization, to fight for those still caught in the struggle caused by prohibition. I was no super hero — until I was.

High, My name is Tracy Curley and I am Canada’s first Weed Woman.

TY: The Trade Show that Was

I learned recently that there isn’t going to be a TY Expo in Toronto this year. I find that sad  and frustrating.

The Treating Yourself Expo, TY Expo as it became known, started in 2010 and was Canada’s largest marijuana-based trade show/expo up till 2013. In 2014, in a last-minute bid to save the event, it was presented as the Champs Expo after they took it on.

Ottawa: Screening ‘The Culture High’

Early this past December I had the pleasure of staying in Ottawa with a close friend to engage in a few amazing experiences. I also had the pleasure of crossing off a few items on my bucket list; I never imagined that I would have the luxury of meeting film producer Adam Scorgie, or Brian O’Dea, Canadian-international marijuana smuggler, anytime in my cannabis-activism career. I was truly thrilled that this was a part of my itinerary in Ottawa.
