Community GMMs — Cranbrook Global Marijuana March

The first Global Marijuana March was started by Dana Beal in New York, USA in 1998. It raised awareness both of the harms of prohibition throughout the world and how it should end. It has now grown to over 900 worldwide participating cities — as a festival in some places — and is celebrated by millions.

Harmless plant, better than the alternative, threat to children, cash crop…. With so many viewpoints, which should dominate the discussion of cannabis in Canada? What is the reason to grow — and legalize — marijuana in our country? What’s the point of legal pot? 

When the Toronto Police Services (TPS) pulled off Project Gator, they were making a statement. I objected to the restriction of the nascent free market already established. The one that could guide the government through recreational legalization. But a reader reminded me that the government never promised a free market. They won based on a promise of regulation and restriction. To remove profits from organized crime and keep marijuana out of the hands of children.

Cannabis Access — Dispensaries and M.O.M.s

The last few years of cannabis in Canada have seen the efforts of activists paying off massively. We’re still waiting for legalization, but the recommendations for it came through on schedule. While they may not be what we end up with, the Liberal government seems to be following through with this campaign promise. That our government would admit the damage prohibition does to society is a huge win for activism.

Project Claudia Update — Raid Response

Toronto is still in turmoil after the Project Claudia raids on medical marijuana dispensaries. Stakeholders met this past Tuesday, June 7th, to prepare for the raids that are rumoured still to come. Meanwhile Canada waits for legalization of recreational pot to be introduced in the spring of 2017.

Trouble in Toronto

Many were shocked when on Thursday, May 26th, Toronto Police Service (TPS) raided more than 40 marijuana dispensaries, using battering rams and entering with guns drawn. 90 people were arrested when Project Claudia happened; police filed 186 trafficking charges (possession for the purpose of) and 71 charges for proceeds of crime (cash seized on premises).

The Path to Legalization Is an Eight-Lane Expressway

It’s been 44 years that I’ve been fighting for legalization for the odd-numbered, serrated leaf we know as marijuana. It’s a long, drawn-out, bloody war that is heavily influenced by racism and a desire to control morality with roots back to the beginnings of the Church.

But I get off topic when I’m smoking weed, back to legalization. With recent developments now both the cities of Vancouver and Victoria are going forward with steps to licence and regulate the dispensaries that have been opening up faster than fireworks stands at Halloween. At the time of writing Vancouver has ninety operating dispensaries and there are six in Victoria, the capital of the province.
