I get asked all the time what it’s like to attend and judge a marijuana competition. Well, I haven’t been around long enough to say what they’ve been like over the years. Also, I’ve only checked out local events thus far. But I was a judge at Kush Cup 2016 — the second time for the Kush Cup — and it did not disappoint.
In 2015 I wrote about the Kush Cup and the boat cruise with the Trailer Park Boys. This year I had plans to attend other events that weekend, so I was surprised when our editor asked me to write about the 2016 Kush Cup. But surprise quickly faded to a grin when she explained she only wanted me to write about judging Kush Cup 2016 weed. This was something I could do.
I’ve been to quite a few marijuana cups, contests, and bowls — and one Ganja Games — as a judge, a member of the cannabis media, and as a competitor over the last fifteen years. I’ve even won a few trophies. While each event was a unique experience some stood out more than others. Here I’ll cover some of those events and why they’re memorable.
After getting through the border from Washington into British Columbia, Mae Moon and I headed towards a friend’s house only about fifteen minutes away. Being back home in Canada was comforting; knowing I could 100 percent legally possess my cannabis buds again, well, I just felt relieved. But after our Google Glass adventure I was drained and wanted a fat joint, a few dabs, and a chance to relax, because the next day was Kush Cup 2014.
Vancouver isn’t known for its blue skies—not when there’s so much rain to talk about—but its summers have their moments and this past August offered some perfect days. One of which was the day of the Kush Cup cruise. Perfect day, not so perfect event. But the people and the pot were just right.
